Dalmatian food info
If you've read the 'breed info' page you will have probably gathered that Dalmatians are quite sensitive when it comes to food! They can still be happy, healthy dogs if you know what to (or what not to!) feed them.
There are lots of different diets, I find a mixture of wet food and dry food is the best for Daisy and Coco. They get fed once a day at 5pm but they do get treats throughout the day.
Some people feed their dogs on purely dry biscuits, which is absolutely fine as long as they're getting the right nutrients. If you decide to go for the dry diet always offer plenty of fresh water. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions.
If you're thinking of a completely wet diet, make sure it's good quality meat and make sure they get vegetables too. Make sure you always have the right quantities of food for your Dalmatian.
A healthy dogs diet should consist of - Protein, Carbohydrate (not too much though!), Fat, Water, Fibre and Vitamins and Minerals.
Foods that are a complete no no!
- Organ meats such as Liver, Heart and Beef. These are high in purine and should never be offered to a Dalmatian. It has been proven that high quantities of these foods can contribute to forming urinary stones in the breed.
- Chicken Bones. These are too small for Dalmatians and they may choke.
- Chocolate. This is toxic to all dogs, they have an intolerance to caffeine and theobromine which are both in chocolate.
- Onions. These can make your Dalmatian anaemic if eaten in large quantities. Best to steer clear of them altogether though!
- Sweets. Never give your Dalmatian sweets there is far too much refined sugar in them and we all know what too much sugar does to kids! Dalmatians are energetic enough!!
- Raisins and Grapes. This is fairly new information and studies have shown as little as 6 grapes can kill a dog (don't know what kind of dog it was though!). Anyway, best to steer clear of them.
